Family CYATHEACEAE

Description: Terrestrial ferns; rhizome erect, arborescent, reaching a height of several metres, densely covered with scales; stipes stout, spreading from the crown, covered with scales at the base; stipe bases persistent or not persistent on trunk.

Fronds uniform, lamina 2-pinnate or more compound, membranous to leathery, vernation circinate; veins free.

Sori superficial, circular; indusium absent or present and at least partly enclosing the sporangia.


Distribution and occurrence: World: 1 genus, c. 550 species, chiefly in wetter tropical regions. Australia: 1 genus, 12 species, Qld, N.S.W., Vic., Tas., W.A.
