Family Lentibulariaceae

Description: Small carnivorous herbs of wet or damp places, sometimes submerged or epiphytic.

Leaves in rosettes, radical or alternate [or in whorls on stolons], often reduced.

Inflorescence a raceme of flowers solitary-scapose. Flowers zygomorphic, bisexual, usually 5-merous. Calyx 2–5-lobed; persistent in fruit. Corolla 5-lobed, usually spurred. Stamens 2, connivent, inserted at the base of the upper corolla lip; with 2 rudimentary stamens; anthers 1- or 2-locular, dehiscing by longitudinal slits. Ovary superior, of 2 carpels, 1-locular; ovules few–many, placentation basal; stigma often sessile, 2-lobed.

Fruit a capsule opening irregularly by 2 or 4 valves; seeds numerous, rarely 1, without endosperm.


Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 2 genera, c. 280 species, cosmopolitan, but mainly tropical regions. Australia: 1 genus, 57 species, all States.
