Description: Mostly trees or shrubs.

Leaves alternate; stipules present.

Inflorescence mostly a raceme or panicle. Flowers usually actinomorphic, bisexual. Sepals 5 or 6, free or united at base. Petals 5, rarely 10. Stamens 5, 10 or numerous, sometimes on an elongated axis. Gynoecium of 2–15 carpels, at least partly fused, often the carpels appear distinct except for the common gynobasic style; ovules 1–many in each carpel. Receptacle usually swelling and becoming fleshy during fruit formation.

Fruit often a cluster of drupes embedded in receptacle, [sometimes a berry or capsule].


Distribution and occurrence: World: 30 genera, 400 species, tropical & subtropical regions. Australia: 2 genera, 2 species (1 species native N Qld, 1 species naturalized).
