Genus Anthoxanthum Family Poaceae

Description: Perennials or annuals, fragrant with coumarin.

Leaves with blade flat, often flaccid. Panicle spike-like or narrow, sometimes reduced to scanty racemes.

Spikelets each with 3 heteromorphous florets, the lower 2 sterile [or male], the terminal bisexual, the rachilla disarticulating above the glumes and the 3 florets falling together, rachilla not produced beyond the uppermost floret. Terminal bisexual floret much shorter than the lower 2.


Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 20 species, temperate & tropical regions. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
