Genus Beta Family Chenopodiaceae

Description: Annual, biennial or perennial herbs, glabrous.

Leaves flat, entire.

Inflorescence spike-like, of 1–3-flowered cymes arranged along a common axis. Flowers bisexual. Perianth segments 5. Stamens 5. Ovary half-inferior; stigmas 2 or 3.

Fruit with a hard apex that eventually falls as a calyptra; seed horizontal.


Distribution and occurrence: World: 6 species, Europe & Mediterranean. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
