Genus Bryophyllum Family Crassulaceae

Description: Erect, succulent, perennial herbs or shrubs, occasionally woody at base, rarely regenerating from base.

Leaves opposite, simple, pinnatifid or pinnate, often forming plantlets along the margins.

Flowers usually 4-merous, pendent in terminal cymes. Sepals small, acute, fused for more than half the length. Petals fused and exceeding the calyx. Stamens twice as many as petals, in 2 rows inserted on the corolla tube in lower third. Carpels 4, free.

Follicles 4, clustered, many-seeded.


Distribution and occurrence: World: 5 species, tropical Africa. Australia: c. 4 species (naturalized), Qld, N.S.W.

B. daigremontiana (Raym.-Hamet & H. Perrier) A. Berger [Kalanchoe daigremontiana Raym.-Hamet & H. Perrier] was previously recorded for N.S.W. (NC CC NWS), but specimens are inadequate for certain identification and they may belong to B. delagoense.
