Genus Escallonia Family Escalloniaceae

Description: Shrubs or small trees.

Leaves alternate, simple, margins entire or often glandular-toothed, often resinous-dotted.

Inflorescences usually terminal, racemes or panicles. Calyx 5-toothed. Petals 5, free, but usually ± cohering and forming a tube. Stamens 5. Ovary inferior, 2-carpellate, 1-locular.

Fruit a capsule, topped by persistent calyx and style; seeds numerous.


Distribution and occurrence: World: 41 species, South America, especially the Andes Mtns. Australia: 3 species (naturalized), N.S.W. and S.A.
