Genus Mangifera Family Anacardiaceae

Description: Trees, polygamous.

Leaves alternate, simple, margins entire.

Inflorescences terminal and/or axillary, paniculate. Flowers bisexual and male on same plants. Sepals usually 5. Petals usually 5. Fertile stamens mostly 1 or 2; staminodes sometimes present. Ovary 1-locular, abortive in male flowers.

Fruit a drupe; exocarp leathery; mesocarp fleshy; endocarp woody and fibrous; seed with testa free from endocarp.


Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 35 species, India to Solomon Is. Australia: 1 species (naturalized)

The Mango is widely cultivated in tropical countries for its edible fruit.
