Description: Climbing or prostrate perennial herbs with stems and petioles twining.
Leaves alternate to subopposite, coarsely toothed or hastately lobed, palmately veined; long-petiolate.
Inflorescence a raceme or of single flowers in the axils of leaf-like bracts; bracteoles absent. Sepals 5, free almost to base. Corolla ± symmetrical at base, 2-lipped, upper lip external in bud, the palate of 2 prominent ridges not closing the throat. Stamens 4, somewhat didynamous; filaments with 2 rows of sessile glands. Stigmas united, small, slightly capitate.
Capsule symmetrical to scarcely oblique, globose, dehiscence by irregular rupturing near the apex; seeds oblong, with irregular thick tubercles or ridges, not winged.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 4 species, U.S.A & Mexico. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
Maurandya and Lophospermum are doubtfully separable.
