Genus Pentaschistis Family Poaceae

Description: Slender annuals.

Leaves with ligule a fringe of hairs; blade hairy, narrow.

Inflorescence a loose panicle, about as long as broad, branches slender.

Spikelets pedicellate, solitary, disarticulating above the glumes and between the lemmas, florets bisexual, 2 rarely 3; rachilla extended as a minute bristle beyond the upper lemma. Glumes lanceolate, equal, acute, translucent, keeled. Lemmas shorter than the glumes, membranous, with 2 delicate narrow lobes, awned from the sinus; 5–11-nerved, hairy between nerves. Palea equal to the lemma, 2-keeled.


Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 70 species, southern Africa, Mediterranean region. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
