Genus Polanisia Family Cleomaceae

Description: Branching annuals, glandular-pubescent with a rank odour.

Leaves usually palmately 3–5-foliolate [or rarely simple]; stipules minute.

Flowers in a terminal raceme, elongating in fruit; lower bracts leaf-like but smaller than leaves, upper bracts usually simple. Sepals 4. Petals 4, notched. Stamens 8–22.

Fruit an erect capsule, ± cylindrical, inflated, distinctly veined, valves separating apically for about half their length; gynophore short; seeds many.


Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 10–30 species, North America. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
