Genus Potamophila Family Poaceae

Description: Tall aquatic or hygrophytic grasses.

Inflorescence an effuse or contracted panicle. Spikelets on short or rather long pedicels, each with 3 florets of which the lower 2 are reduced to very small scale-like lemmas, disarticulating above the minute rudimentary glumes; uppermost floret well-developed and fertile, bisexual or unisexual with the organs of 1 sex reduced. Stamens 6. Styles 2, distinct, the stigmas plumose.


Distribution and occurrence: World: 1 species, endemic Australia. Australia: 1 species, endemic.

Closely related to the African genera Maltebrunia and Prosphytochloa. Derivation: from the Greek words for ‘river’ and ‘liking’.
