Description: Shrubs or small trees, glabrous; branches with prominent annular scars from fallen leaves.

Leaves crowded, ovate or lanceolate, acute or subulate, concolorous or discolorous, glabrous, lower surface parallel-veined, base sheathing stem.

Inflorescence terminal, flowers crowded in spikes or panicle; bracts 1–6, often unequal in size, falling or persistent. Sepals 5, ovate, glabrous. Corolla ovoid or conical, glabrous, ± closed at apex but splitting transversely near the base, the upper operculum falling off entire, leaving a persistent ring. Stamens 4 or 5, inserted on receptacle; filaments persistent until fruiting; anthers versatile, or sometimes adnate to filament near base, exserted. Nectary of indistinct scales or absent. Ovary 5-locular with many ovules per loculus, placentation axile; style inserted in tubular depression in ovary; stigma small, lobed.

Fruit a loculicidal capsule.


Distribution and occurrence: World: 11 species, endemic Australia. Australia: N.S.W., Tas., Vic.
