Description: Herbaceous annuals, biennials or perennials.

Leaves alternate, mostly with Kranz (C4) anatomy.

Flowers bisexual, axillary, sessile, subtended by a pair of leaf-like bracteoles. Perianth segments 5, each developing a lateral wing-like appendage. Stamens 5. Stigmas 2.

Fruiting perianth with 5 fan-like wings. Embryo in a conical spiral.


Distribution and occurrence: World: >100 species, cosmopolitan. Australia: 1 species (native).
