Genus Turraea Family Meliaceae

Description: Small trees, ± deciduous, indumentum of simple hairs.

Leaves alternate, simple, margins ± entire.

Inflorescences axillary, few-flowered racemes, or flowers solitary or fasiculate. Flowers bisexual, 3–5-merous. Calyx 3–5-lobed. Petals 3–5, free. Stamens usually 7–12, filament tube cylindrical, inflated apically, terminated by 2-lobed free or fused appendages; anthers inserted at top of tube. Disc usually tubular with crenate margin. Ovary 3–10-locular, each with 1 or 2 ovules.

Fruit a loculicidal capsule, 3–10-valved; seeds with a fleshy aril.


Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 90 species, Africa, Madagascar, Mauritius, tropical Asia to Australia. Australia: 1 species (native).
