Cyanthillium cinereum var. cinereum (L.) H.Rob. APNI*

Synonyms: Vernonia cinerea (L.) Less. var. cinerea APNI*

Description: Stems and leaves greyish-pubescent; basal and lower leaves elliptic-ovate to rhomboid-ovate; upper leaves oblong to linear-oblong, remotely irregularly toothed to almost entire.

Flowers purple or bluish purple; corolla 3,5–4 mm long.

Achenes 1.5–1.75 mm long, densely hairy.


Flowering: Flowers and fruits for most of the year.

Distribution and occurrence: Pantropical and frequent weed of waste places. In NSW, Qld, Vic., WA and N. Terr. Ghafoor, A. in Wilson, A.J.G. (ed.) (2015), Asteraceae Subfam. Cichorioideae Trib. 3. Vernonieae. Flora of Australia 37: 183-184 considered this variety to be introduced to Australia. However, it has been suggested that this variety might be naturally occuring in eastern Australia.
