Miscanthus sinensis var. sinensis Andersson APNI*

Description: Erect tufted perennial, 2–3 m high.

Leaves mostly basal, numerous, green throughout; ligule a short ciliate rim; blade to 10 mm wide, margins regularly toothed, hirsute at the orifice.

Inflorescence digitate or a short primary axis with numerous silky, spreading racemes to 25 cm long. Spikelets paired, 4–5.5 mm long, with a ring of white hairs at the base. Lower glume 3-nerved, glabrous; upper 1-nerved, glabrous or with a few hairs. Lower lemma shorter than the glumes; upper lemma with a delicate geniculate awn 7–10 mm long. Palea 25–50% the length of the lemma.


Flowering: summer.

Distribution and occurrence: Occurs in the lower Blue Mtns, Central Coast; native to SE Asia..

Commonly cultivated but now escaped and naturalized especially along railway embankments.
