Aponogeton elongatus Benth. APNI*

Description: Tuberous aquatic perennial with mainly submerged leaves and a few floating leaves.

Submerged leaves to 30 cm long and 4 cm wide; floating leaves with lamina narrow-elliptic, to 15 cm long, 2–4 cm wide, petiole to c. 1 m long, depending on water depth.

Spathe to 1.5 cm long. Flowers well spaced, yellow. Perianth segments 2, spathulate, 1.5–2.5 mm long, 0.75–1.5 mm wide. Stamens c. 10, variable in number and apparently not all functional. Carpels 3.

Fruit thick-coated, 2.5–5.8 mm long, 1.8–5.0 mm wide; beak mostly lateral, occasionally terminal, to 1.5 mm long. Seeds 2–5 per fruit, 1.2–3.2(–42) mm long, 0.5–1.1(–1.6) mm wide, elliptic, with a single testa, closely adhering to embryo or very thin.

Flowering: In warmer months.

Distribution and occurrence: North from the Clarence R. district (NC); also Queensland. Commonly grown as an aquarium plant.

In rivers and streams with thick sediment, or floodplain billabongs, tubers can survive many years buried in sediment.
