Description: Compact tufted perennial to 1.2 m high; culms compressed or the upper internodes terete, simple, few-noded, erect or sprawling.

Leaves with sheath glabrous; ligule < 0.5 mm long; blade conduplicate-involute, bristly, 1–2 mm wide, minutely scabrous.

Panicle contracted, loose, interrupted, to 20 cm long, branches few. Glumes linear to ovate, 7–18 mm long, unequal, both acute to acuminate. Lemma linear-elliptic, 7–12 mm long, sparsely scabrous near the apex or smooth, brown and usually with purple markings; column twisted, 5–17 mm long; awns dissimilar, middle sharply recurved to divergent, 17–45 mm long.
