Astelia alpina R.Br. APNI*

Description: Mat-forming herb; leaves, scapes and panicles covered with white-silvery scales; bases of leaves and scapes with long filiform silky scales.

Leaves linear, 5–17 cm long, 5–15 mm wide, apex acute, upper surface green to grey-green, lower surface shiny grey-green to silvery white.

Male panicle exserted, open, 10–50-flowered, 30–80 mm long; scape 3–12 cm long; spathes 3–7, the lowest leafy; pedicels 2–12 mm long. Female panicle contracted, few-flowered, hidden among leaves, 1–2.5 cm long; scape 2–8 cm long; lowest spathes linear; pedicels 0–8 mm long. Perianth greenish yellow, 2–4 mm long in male flowers, 4–6 mm long in female flowers; tepals basally free.

Berry oblong, 6–10 mm long, 3–4 mm diam., 1-locular, red; seeds 4–8, c. 1.8 mm long.
