Atriplex acutibractea R.H.Anderson APNI*

Description: Erect (procumbent specimens in Vic) short lived perennial shrub, intricately branched with stiff tangled branches, grey and mealy, rounded to 50 cm. Monoecious.

alternate, elliptic, ovate, obovate to orbicular, 5–30 cm long, apex acute, margins entire or with broad shallow teeth (shallowly sinuate dentate), flat or folded (dry conditions?), sessile or shortly petiolate, scaly tomentose on both surfaces or glabrescent above.

Axillary, almost sessile, solitary or in small clusters or short interrupted spikes, male glomerules inconspicuous, clusters bisexual or mixed sexes.

Bracteoles acute, rhombic to oblong, fused to about half way, tridentate at apex, occasionally the apex with lateral teeth, 6–8 mm long; 2–4 conical, dorsal appendages on one or both bracteoles at summit of stipe-like base, sometimes absent.Seeds: Circular, radical lateral, erect.

Flowering: Most months especially July to October

Distribution and occurrence: Various habitats most frequently in mallee on red earth soils (in Vic on lime rich sandy soils). SW of NSW between Balranald & Broken Hill. Not common, in widely scattered groups or as occasional plants.
