Description: Caespitose perennial to 1.2 m high, with conspicuously extravaginal shoots from a short rhizome.

Leaves with ligule firm and leathery, truncate, ciliate, 0.3–0.6 mm long; auricles thickened and spreading, with a tuft of hairs below; blade tightly rolled to expanded, to 7 mm wide, puberulous to glabrous or scaberulous, rarely hirsute basally, ribbed on upper surface.

Panicle exserted late in development, contracted to loosely spreading, usually dense, 10–40 cm long. Spikelets gaping, 9–16 mm long (excluding awn). Glumes unequal, acuminate. Lemma 5.5–9 mm long, granular, sparsely hairy, dark brown at maturity; coma 0.3–1.2 mm long; lobes 1 or 2, 0.1–0.5 mm long. Callus fine and straight, silky. Awn twice bent, 4–7 cm long. Palea to 0.7 mm shorter than the lemma.


Flowering: spring–summer.

Distribution and occurrence: Grows in heath and on sandy soils in coastal areas; south from Nowra district.
