Description: Caespitose perennial to c. 1 m high.

Leaves with ligule truncate, membranous, glabrous to sparsely ciliate, 0.5–2 mm long; auricles usually thickened and spreading, ciliate at the base; blade expanded to inrolled, 1–3 mm wide, scaberulous to pubescent.

Panicle exserted, open or occasionally contracted, 15–50 cm long. Spikelets gaping after floret disarticulating, otherwise tightly closed, 10–15 mm long (excluding awn). Glumes subequal to unequal, acute to acuminate. Lemma 4–7 mm long, slightly granular to smooth, silky; lobes absent or 2, glabrous, 0.1–0.4 mm long; coma obscure, of few hairs 0.4–1 mm long. Callus sturdy, weakly bent at the tip, densely silky. Awn falcate, 4.5–10 cm long. Palea subequal to the lemma.

Distribution and occurrence: Widespread, mostly on heavier soils of winter rainfall areas.
