Description: Caespitose perennial to c. 1 m high, with conspicuously extravaginal shoots from a short rhizome.

Leaves with ligule leathery, obtuse, 0.6–2 mm long, ciliate; auricles absent; blade tightly rolled, 1–2 mm wide, upper surface strongly ribbed, densely pubescent.

Panicle contracted, exserted, 11–25 cm long. Spikelets gaping widely, 18–29 mm long (excluding awn). Glumes unequal, acute. Lemma 10–13 mm long, smooth to finely tuberculate upwards, with sparse white hairs below, pale reddish brown at maturity; lobes and coma absent. Callus weakly bent with white to slightly reddish brown hairs. Awn with 2 or 3 bends, scabrous, 5.5–9.5 cm long; column 3–6 cm long, 2.5–4 c. to the first bend. Palea subequal to the lemma.
