Bacopa caroliniana (Walter) Rob. APNI*

Description: Floating aquatic or terrestrial herb with ascending branchlets; glabrous except for short, sparse to dense non-glandular hairs on branches, pedicels and sepal tips.

Leaves ovate to broad-ovate, usually 8–12 mm long, 6–10 mm wide, apex obtuse, base cordate, margins entire to ± sinuate; sessile.

Flowers solitary towards end of branches; pedicels 5–15 mm long; bracteoles minute, c. 0.5 mm long. Sepals 6–11 mm long, outer 3 ovate and c. 5 mm or more wide, 2 inner ones c. 0.8 mm wide. Corolla 9–11 mm long, blue or purple; tube 5–6 mm long; lobes spreading, rounded.

Capsule ovoid, 4–5 mm long, topped by persistent style c. 3 mm long.


Flowering: recorded December

Distribution and occurrence: Grows on margin of freshwater dam, apparently naturalized after planting many years earlier; Bulahdelah district. Native of SE U.S.A.
