Bulbostylis pyriformis S.T.Blake APNI*

Description: Slender, pubescent tufted annual.

Culms ± terete, hispid, 10–20 (rarely to 40) cm high, 0.3–0.6 mm diam.

Leaves shorter than culms, pubescent, to 2 cm long, to 0.4 mm wide. Inflorescence of 1–6 spikelets on branches to 2 cm long; involucral bracts usually shorter than inflorescence. Spikelets ovoid, many-flowered, 5–12 mm long, 2–3 mm diam., red-brown. Glumes strongly keeled, subobtuse, shortly mucronulate or muticous, 2.5–3.2 mm long, pubescent, margins ± ciliolate, red-brown to very dark red-brown. Stamens 3; anthers 0.3–0.6 mm long. Style 3-fid; style base may fall early.

Nut trigonous, broadly obpyriform, 1–1.4 mm long, 0.8–1 mm diam., tuberculate, 3-ribbed, white or straw-coloured, barely shining; epidermal cells shortly and minutely vertically oblong.

Distribution and occurrence: Grows in seasonally wet situations in woodland; north from Narrabri region.
