Callistemon purpurascens S.M.Douglas & S.David APNI*

Description: Shrub c. 3.5(–7) m high; bark slightly fissured and flaking on the trunk and main branches.

Leaves coriaceous, usually glabrous, but occasionally with a few hairs towards the base; lamina narrow-obovate, 30–70 mm long, 5–8(–11) mm wide; apex acute to acuminate, mucronate.

Inflorescence spike-like, 40–48(–55) mm wide; flowers single, c. 20–60 per infloresence. Hypanthium tuberculate, downy-hairy, 3–4 mm long; sepals sparsely hairy with scarious margins; stamens numerous, filaments purple, 17–23 mm long, anthers dark purple to brown; style 18–23 mm long.

Capsules 8–10 mm wide, globose to barrel-shaped.

Flowering: early Summer.

Distribution and occurrence: Only known from the vicinity of two unnamed tributaries of Megalong Creek.

Riparian shrubland, swamp woodland and swamp forest.
NSW subdivisions: CT
