Description: Rhizome short; shoots densely tufted. Culms erect, trigonous, smooth, 20–90 cm long, 2–2.5 mm diam.

Leaves exceeding culms; blade 4–8 mm wide; sheath bright yellow-brown, with thin portion red-dotted; ligule acute to obtuse.

Inflorescence erect to spreading, 8–15 cm long, with 4–6 spikes solitary at nodes; lowest involucral bracts exceeding inflorescence. Spikes long-pedicellate to sessile, ± contiguous, spreading at maturity, 2–6 cm long; uppermost spike (rarely 2) male; lower spikes female, or occasionally all androgynous. Glumes obtuse, often short-mucronate, dark red-brown; female glumes 2.5–3.2 mm long. Perigynia (utricles) ovoid to ellipsoid, faintly several- to numerous-nerved, 2.8–3.8 mm long, 1.6–2.0 mm diam., minutely papillose, dark red-brown; beak to 0.3 mm long, with apex truncate or obliquely truncate. Anthers 2–2.5 mm long excluding appendage to 0.1 mm long. Style 2-fid.

Nut broad-obovoid, lenticular in cross section, very dark brown.

Flowering: spring–summer.

Distribution and occurrence: Coastal ranges and the eastern edge of the tablelands, north from Central Tablelands (near Burrawang and Mt Werong).

Grows in swamps.
