Description: Perennial herb forming clumps, up to 1 m high, sparsely to moderately hirsute.

Lower leaves radical, 4–30 cm long, 10–20 mm wide, lanceolate to spathulate, with long petiole-like bases, usually entire but occasionally with 2 basal lobes or 1-pinnate; upper cauline leaves sessile, 2–5 cm long, entire.

Heads solitary or in loose cymes, on peduncles 25–30 cm long; heads 10–20 mm diam.; outer bracts lanceolate to ± ovate, herbaceous, usually ciliate near apex; inner bracts ovate-triangular, with dark lined central area and membranous margins, glabrous. Ray florets c. 8, 3–4 cm long, bright yellow, toothed. Disc florets numerous, yellow.

Achenes compressed, black, 2–3 mm long with 2 broad wings; pappus 2 awns with antrorse hairs.

Distribution and occurrence: Garden escape of roadsides, railway lines and disturbed areas; west to Griffith district. Native of N Amer.
