Description: Herb with a single scape 9–15 cm high; roots thick, spreading.

Leaves mostly basal, oblong to narrow-oblanceolate, 1.5–5 cm long, 2–5 mm wide, often folded; upper surface brown with a silvery covering of appressed hairs, lower surface similar or glabrescent; margins entire or undulate, glabrescent or silky; upper leaves decurrent.

Compound head hemispherical, 10–15 mm diam., with c. 30–60 partial heads; partial heads with 4 or 5 florets, main bract woolly at base and with broad dark brown scarious margins; scape red with dense silvery hairs. Corollas white.

Achenes 1–1.5 mm long; pappus of 12–18 colourless plumose hairs 2–3 mm long.

Distribution and occurrence: Grows in moist depressions and alpine bogs, often with leaves partly submerged; south from Kosciusko area.
