Craspedia variabilis J.Everett & Doust APNI*

Description: Erect herb with 1-several scapes to 50 cm high, branched simply at the base; roots thick, spreading; base of leaves retained, reddish and overlapping.

Leaves basal and cauline, narrow-spathulate, 5–13 cm long, 5–13 mm wide, apex broad-acute, gland-tipped, pale to olive-green, with glandular hairs and multiseptate hairs and with very sparse long fine hairs.

Compound heads globose, 10–25 mm diam., with c. 40–100 partial heads; partial heads stalked, with 7–12 florets, main bract decurrent, glandular, central portion herbaceous and woolly at base, and with a colourless to brown, scarious lamina; scape yellowish to reddish, hairy. Corollas golden-yellow.

Achenes 1.5–2.5 mm long; pappus of 13–21 colourless, plumose bristles 3–6 mm long.

Distribution and occurrence: Grows in sclerophyll forest, woodland, grassland; widespread.
