Cyperus aggregatus (Willd.) Endl. APNI*

Description: Small tufted perennial with short, thick rhizome. Culms triquetrous, smooth, with bulbous base, 5–60 cm high, 1–2.5 mm diam.

Leaves not to slightly septate-nodulose, mostly shorter than culms, 1–6 mm wide.

Inflorescence simple, with 3–6 dense spikes either sessile or rarely on short branches to 1.5 cm long; spikes ovoid to oblong-cylindrical, 1–3 cm long, 4–10 mm diam.; involucral bracts leaf-like, 2–4 exceeding inflorescence. Spikelets subterete, numerous per spike, 3–6 mm long, c. 1.5 mm diam., 1–3-flowered; rachilla broadly winged; spikelet falling as unit. Glumes acute, with sides 4-nerved, 3–4 mm long, whitish to yellow-brown. Stamens 3. Style 3-fid.

Nut trigonous, obovoid or ellipsoid, about two-thirds length of glume, 1.5–2.1 mm long, 0.8–1 mm diam., blackish.

Flowering: spring–summer.

Distribution and occurrence: Naturalised near Kingscliff, Iluka, Grafton, Myall Lakes, Bemboka, Bebo State Forest, Inverell, Tingha, Warialda, Kootingal, and lower Hunter Valley to Sydney. Native of S Amer.

A weed in sandy soil.
