Cyperus dubius Rottb. APNI*

Description: Tufted perennial with short rhizome.

Culms triquetrous, smooth, apparently swollen for some distance at base because of numerous persistent whitish sheaths, 10–45 cm high, to 2 mm diam.

Leaves not septate-nodulose, longer than culms, 2–5 mm wide. Inflorescence simple, with 1–6 dense sessile, clustered, broad-ovoid spikes, 1–2 cm long and diam.; involucral bracts leaf-like, 3–5 exceeding inflorescence. Spikelets subterete, numerous per spike, 4–7 mm long, c. 1.5 mm diam., 2–6-flowered; rachilla broadly winged; spikelet falling as unit. Glumes obtuse, with sides 7–9-nerved, 2.5–4 mm long, white to straw-coloured. Stamens 3. Style 3-fid.

Nut trigonous, ellipsoid, about half the length of glume, 1.5–2.5 mm long, c. 0.8 mm diam., dark brown.

Flowering: spring–summer.

Distribution and occurrence: Known from near Newcastle, Port Stephens and Chatswood in Sydney. Native of Afr. & Asia.

Grows in sandy disturbed areas.
