Cyperus sculptus S.T.Blake APNI*

Description: Small, densely tufted perennial.

Culms trigonous, smooth, to 25 cm long, to 0.5 mm diam.

Leaves almost filiform, not septate-nodulose, shorter than culms. Inflorescence a digitate cluster to 10 mm diam. of 2–5 spikelets, without branches, or a solitary spikelet; involucral bracts leaf-like, 2 much longer than inflorescence. Spikelets flattened, 7–10 (rarely to 15) mm long, c. 2 mm wide in side view, 14–20-flowered; rachilla not winged, persistent. Glumes obtuse, slightly excurved, with sides 3- or 4-nerved, 1.4–1.9 mm long, greenish to pale brown. Stamens 3. Style 3-fid.

Nut trigonous, broad-ellipsoid to broad-obovoid, about two-thirds as long as glume, 0.8–1 mm long, 0.5–0.9 mm diam., dark brown.

Distribution and occurrence: Grows in openings in sclerophyll forest; only known near Woodenbong.
