Cyperus stradbrokensis Domin APNI*

Description: Small, tufted perennial with short rhizome.

Culms trigonous, smooth, often with fibrous remains of leaf sheaths, 30–45 cm high, c. 1.5 mm diam.

Leaves not septate-nodulose, shorter than culms, 1–2 mm wide. Inflorescence head-like or simple with up to 4 branches to 4 cm long; digitate clusters to 15 mm diam.; involucral bracts leaf-like, the lowest 1 erect, 2–4 times as long as inflorescence. Spikelets flattened, 4–20 per cluster, c. 5 mm long, c. 2 mm wide, 9–13-flowered; rachilla not winged, persistent. Glumes excurved-mucronate, with sides 1-nerved, 1–1.3 mm long, whitish to pale brown. Stamens 2. Style 3-fid.

Nut triquetrous, obovoid to ellipsoid, almost as long as glume and broader than it, c. 0.8 mm long, c. 0.7 mm diam., dark brown to blackish.

Distribution and occurrence: Grows in littoral rainforest and heath, on sandy soil; north from Hat Head.
