Description: Loosely tufted perennial to 0.3 m high.
Leaves with ligule membranous, 1–3 mm long, subtruncate, erose and ciliolate at the apex; blade moderately stiff, to 3 mm wide, surfaces smooth and glabrous to hispidulous, margins scabrous.
Panicle narrow and contracted, c. 2–5 cm long. Spikelets 2.8–3.5 mm long. Glumes subequal or unequal, antrorsely scabrid on the keel above, acute, subacute or with a minute mucro. Lemma lanceolate, 2.3–2.8 mm long, 5-nerved, smooth towards the base becoming scaberulous especially on the nerves above, subacute or irregularly toothed at the apex; callus blunt, densely bearded, c. 0.2 mm long; awn usually shortly exserted, antrorsely scabrid, straight or slightly geniculate, not or scarcely twisted, 1–2 mm long, attached in the upper 30% of the lemma. Palea shorter than lemma.
Flowering: summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in rocky areas in short alpine herbfields, and in moist areas; south from the Kosciusko area.
