Description: Erect tufted perennial to 0.8 m high.

Leaves with ligule membranous, truncate, laciniate, 3–4 mm long; blade 2–5 mm wide, scabrous on both surfaces.

Panicle loose, 5–28 cm long, with 3–5-nate, filiform branches bare at the base. Spikelets 3.5–5 mm long, laterally compressed. Glumes subequal, acute, 1-nerved, keeled. Lemma subequal to lower glume, rather broad-lanceolate, coarsely scaberulous, rather acute or very narrow-truncate at the apex, 4-nerved above the middle, with a dorsal awn attached about or rarely just above the middle; awn short, scarcely or shortly exceeding the lemma; callus shortly barbed with hairs 0.2–0.6 mm long. Palea slightly shorter than or subequal to lemma.
