Deyeuxia mesathera Stapf ex Vickery APNI*

Description: Tufted perennial to 1.2 m high.

Leaves with ligule membranous, 2–4 mm long, truncate or jagged; blade 2–3 mm wide, scabrous.

Panicle dense, contracted, somewhat lobed, 5.5–25 cm long, with appressed branches, the spikelets arranged racemosely on the ultimate branches. Spikelets c. 3 mm long, laterally compressed. Glumes subequal or unequal, acute, rather broad, 1-nerved, keeled, somewhat gaping. Lemma lanceolate, minutely toothed at the apex, narrow-truncate, subequal to glumes, very minutely but densely scaberulous, 5-nerved below the middle, bearing a dorsal awn attached at or slightly above the middle; awn straight, exceeding the lemma by 0.5–1 mm; callus barbed with fine hairs to 0.2–1 mm long. Palea almost equalling the lemma.

Distribution and occurrence: Grows in swamps and on riverbanks; south from Sydney.
