Description: Annual or short-lived tufted perennial to c. 0.7 m high.

Culms smooth, branching from lower nodes.

Leaves with sheath becoming loose with age, mostly smooth; ligule membranous, to 6 mm long, becoming laciniate or ragged with age; blade inrolled or flat, to 4 mm wide, scaberulous. Inflorescence contracted at first, spreading later, to 30 cm long; rachis scabrous; branches appressed at first, spreading later; pedicel 0–0.5 mm long. Spikelets 3.5–5 mm long, florets 4–6 with the uppermost often reduced. Glumes unequal, lower 0.9–1.3 mm long, upper 1.8–2 mm long. Lemmas 1.8–2.5 mm long, apiculate, 3-nerved, glabrous on the back, lower 45% of margins with fine hairs to 0.3 mm long. Palea subequal to lemma, 2-keeled, keels scabrous.


Flowering: summer.

Distribution and occurrence: Grows in ditches and drains, only known from the Naval Arms Depot near Homebush Bay. Native of Amer.
