Description: Tufted perennial, with short rhizome.

Culms terete, 20–45 cm long, 2–5 mm diam.

Spikelet cylindrical, 2–3 cm long, 2–4 mm diam. Glumes acuminate, keeled, c. 2 mm long, yellow-brown with broad hyaline margin. Bristles 6 or 7, slightly shorter than nut, whitish. Stamens 1 or 2; anthers 0.6–1.0 mm long. Style 3-fid.

Nut trigonous with angles ribbed, obovoid, with small neck, obscurely reticulate, c. 0.8 mm long, c. 0.5 mm diam., pale brown or greenish grey; style base about a sixth as long as and about a quarter as broad as nut.

Flowering: spring–summer.

Distribution and occurrence: Naturalised in irrigation area near Griffith; apparently destroyed there by 2003 when the irrigation channel was filled in. Native of Argentina.
