Eleocharis philippinensis Svenson APNI*

Description: Tufted perennial with slender rhizomes.

Culms acutely and unequally 4- or 5-angled, not transversely septate, 25–50 cm high, c. 2 mm diam.

Spikelet linear-cylindrical, 2–6 cm long, 2–3 mm diam. Glumes rather remote, ± in 4 rows, obtuse, rather prominently keeled and many-nerved, with narrow hyaline margins, 4–5.5 mm long, 2–2.5 mm wide, greenish to straw-coloured. Bristles 6 or 7, from less than half as long as to slightly exceeding nut, retrorsely scabrous. Stamens 3; anthers 0.7–1.8 mm long. Style 2- or 3-fid.

Nut turgidly biconvex with slightly ribbed angles, obovoid, slightly narrowed in a neck, 1.5–1.7 mm long, 1.2–1.6 mm diam., straw-coloured to dark brown; surface deeply pitted with the isodiametric external cells in 15–20 vertical rows; style base about half as long and two-thirds to three-quarters as broad as nut, the prominent annulus outwardly curved upwards.

Flowering: spring–summer.

Distribution and occurrence: North from Kempsey, with an apparent outlier in Sydney region and near Texas. Also in Queensland, Western Australia, Malesia and New Caledonia.

Grows in swampy areas.
