Description: Light green annual to 1 m high.

Leaves with sheath loose, smooth, the upper glabrous or finely hairy; ligule c. 1 mm long; blade 4–7 mm wide, ± finely pubescent on the upper surface.

Inflorescence 6–10 cm long, 1–2 cm wide; racemes 4–7, erect and appressed, to 3 cm long, the pedicels mostly paired, the shorter to 1.5 mm, the longer to 3 mm long, usually with a few 1–4 mm hairs below the apex. Spikelets alternate, 6–12 mm long, hairy. Lower glume cupuliform, surrounding the callused internode of the rachilla above it and scarcely distinguishable from it; upper equalling the spikelet, aristulate, with appressed hairs on the lower 30%. Sterile lemma similar to the upper glume but distinctly shorter. Fertile lemma c. 3 mm long (excluding the bristle), terminating in a scabrid bristle c. 1.5 mm long.
