Description: Tufted perennial to 1.4 m high.

Leaves with ligule membranous, to 1.5 mm long, truncate to obtuse; auricles, if present, membranous, only on 1 side; blade flat or inrolled, to 8 mm wide, scabrous.

Inflorescence paniculate, open, 15–25 cm long, to 12 cm wide, rachis scabrous, glabrous. Spikelets 10–14 mm long, 8–12 mm wide, florets 4–6, uppermost floret often reduced; pedicels 0.5–15 mm long, scabrous, glabrous; rachilla scabrous. Glumes unequal, acute, awnless, keeled, membranous, glabrous, smooth; lower 4–6 mm long; upper broader than lower glume, 5–8 mm long. Lemmas lanceolate, 6.5–10.0 mm long, acute or mucronate, round on back, upper 50% sometimes keeled, nerves scabrous, glabrous; callus glabrous. Palea subequal to lemma, acute, 2-keeled, keels lightly scabrous, glabrous.


Flowering: spring–summer.

Distribution and occurrence: Grows in montane woodland and grassland; south from Barrington Tops.
