Fimbristylis bisumbellata (Forssk.) Bubani APNI*

Description: Slender densely tufted annual.

Culms compressed, 7–25 cm high, 0.5–1 mm diam.

Leaves shorter to somewhat longer than culms, 1–2 mm wide; ligule a dense fringe of short hairs. Inflorescence compound or decompound, with many solitary spikelets, on branches to 4 cm long; involucral bracts leaf-like, 2 or 3 much shorter than to much exceeding inflorescence. Spikelets ovoid to cylindrical, angular, acute, 3–8 mm long, c. 1.5 mm diam. Glumes spiral, membranous, acute, mucronulate, with 3-nerved acute midrib, hyaline margins, 1.3–1.8 mm long, glabrous, red-brown sides. Stamen 1; anther 0.5 mm long. Style 2-fid, ciliate above.

Nut biconvex, broad-obovoid or obovoid, shortly stipitate, 0.6–0.7 mm long, 0.4–0.5 mm diam., conspicuously trabeculate, pale yellow, with epidermal cells impressed, transversely oblong, in 5–9 vertical rows on either face.

Distribution and occurrence: Grows on stream banks, on sandy soil; collected near Grevillia and Casino.
