Fimbristylis cinnamometorum (Vahl) Kunth APNI*

Description: Slender tufted perennial with very short rhizome.

Culms compressed, 25–50 cm high, 0.5–1 mm diam.

Leaves at least half as long as culms, 0.3–0.5 mm wide; ligule absent or scattered hairs present. Inflorescence compound or decompound, loose, with many solitary spikelets, on branches to 4 cm long; involucral bracts leaf-like, 1 or 2 erect, much shorter to slightly longer than inflorescence, to 4 cm long. Spikelets oblong or oblong-linear, strongly compressed, acute, few-flowered, 4–5 mm long, 1–2 mm diam. Glumes ± distichous, thinly membranous, acute, muticous or mucronulate, with 3-nerved midrib, 2.7–4 mm long, ± scabrous, pale brown, densely red-dotted. Stamens 3; anthers (1-)1.5–2 mm long. Style 3-fid, shortly hairy at base.

Nut trigonous with somewhat convex sides, ellipsoid or obovoid, 0.7–0.9 mm long, 0.4–0.7 mm diam., verruculose, finely transversely lineolate by the oblong-linear epidermal cells, glistening, straw-coloured to brown.

Distribution and occurrence: Grows in woodland and on wet flats, on sandy soil; north from the Grafton area.
