Description: Slender tufted perennial.

Culms compressed, 15–60 cm high, 0.5–2 mm diam.

Leaves shorter than culms, 0.5–0.7 mm wide, with broad whitish scarious margins to sheaths; ligule absent. Inflorescence simple to subcompound, with 4–16 spikelets in dense clusters of 3–5, on branches to 5 cm long, or head-like; involucral bracts leaf-like, 1 or 2 longer than inflorescence. Spikelets ovoid, terete, 8–18 mm long, 3–4.5 mm diam. Glumes spirally arranged, obtuse, papery, with several nerves near midrib, margins hyaline, 3.5–5 mm long, pale brown. Stamens 3; anthers 2–3.5 mm long. Style 3-fid, glabrous.

Nut obtusely trigonous, obpyriform, 1.5–2 mm long, c. 1.2 mm diam., tuberculate, whitish to mid-brown.
