Description: Caespitose rhizomatous perennial to 0.8 m high; culms slender, erect, ribbed, glabrous; nodes 3–5, ribbed, glabrous; sheaths enclosing culm, overlapping.
Leaves with sheath ribbed, glabrous; ligule membranous, truncate, erose, 4–6 mm long; blade flat, to 6 mm wide, ribbed, midrib prominent, sometimes split along midrib, glabrous.
Inflorescence racemose, 10–23 cm long, exserted, straight or curved; rachis exposed, ribbed, glabrous. Spikelets 7–25 mm long, 2–15 bisexual florets; pedicels to 25 mm long, glabrous. Glumes elliptic, acute or obtuse, membranous, 1-nerved; lower 2–3 mm long, upper 3–4 mm long. Lemmas 4–6 mm long, 5-nerved, scabrous, appears to be 5-toothed however apex translucent and acute, erose. Palea as long as lemma, 2-nerved, 2-keeled, 2-lobed, the lobes c. 1 mm long, glabrous.
Flowering: spring.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in damp areas. Native of Eur., Amer.
