Description: Caespitose perennial to 1.1 m high.

Leaves with sheath usually shorter than the internode, tightly enclosing culm, ribbed, glabrous; ligule membranous, c. 5 mm long, acute; blade flat, to 0.5 cm wide, ribbed, midrib prominent, glabrous, scabrous.

Inflorescence compact, 10–15 cm long, to 2 cm wide. Spikelets 15 mm long, 2–6 florets; pedicels to 5 cm long, scabrous; rachilla pubescent with hairs < 0.25 mm long. Glumes lanceolate, acute, 5-nerved, keeled, keel scabrous, margins membranous; lower 7–10 mm long, upper 8–11 mm long. Lemmas overlapping, 6–9 mm long, 7-nerved, keeled, keel off-centre, margins membranous, pubescent on lower half with hairs < 0.5 mm long; 2-lobed, the lobes truncate, c. 0.5 mm long, erose. Palea 5–7 mm long, 2-keeled, pubescent with hairs < 0.25 mm long.


Flowering: spring–summer.

Distribution and occurrence: Grows in wet areas in grasslands and by roadsides.
