Description: Erect annual to 1 m high.

Leaves with ligule membranous, to 2 mm long, obtuse; auricles membranous; blade flat, to 12 mm wide.

Inflorescence spicate, dense, cylindrical, 6–10 cm long (excluding awns), to 1 cm wide (excluding awns). Spikelets 9–12 mm long (excluding awns), arranged in triplets, florets 1; lateral spikelets male with pedicels c. 1 mm long, often with hairs < 0.25 mm long; central spikelet female, sessile, rachilla often prolonged, to 5 mm long, with hairs < 0.25–0.5 mm long. Glumes 5–6 mm long, tapering to an awn, with hairs < 0.25–0.5 mm long; awn straight, to 6 mm long, scabrous. Male lemma 7–8 mm long, acute or obtuse, awnless, glabrous; palea slightly shorter than lemma. Female lemma 8–12 mm long, tapering to an awn, ridges scabrous, glabrous, awn straight, to 15 cm long; palea subequal to lemma.


Flowering: spring.

Distribution and occurrence: A cereal crop, also occurs on roadsides. Native of Eur.
