Hordeum hystrix Roth APNI*

Description: Tufted annual to 0.4 m high.

Leaves with ligule membranous, c. 0.5 mm long, toothed, 1 end often with 1 larger tooth to 1 mm long; auricles absent; blade flat, to 3 mm wide, with hairs c. 0.5 mm long.

Inflorescence spicate, dense, 1–5 cm long to 0.7 cm wide (excluding awns); rachis breaking below each node at maturity. Spikelets 5–8 mm long (excluding awns), in triplets, florets 1; lateral spikelets male with pedicels to 1 mm long; central spikelet female, sessile. Glumes equal, bristle-like to lanceolate, 4–6 mm long, tapering to an awn to 12 mm long. Male lemma 2–4 mm long, tapering to an awn to 5 mm long; palea absent or reduced. Female lemma 4–6 mm long, tapering to an awn to 13 mm long; palea subequal to lemma.


Flowering: spring.

Distribution and occurrence: Weed of disturbed sites. Native of Medit. region.
